Long term accommodation

There are many different options and solutions you may consider.
In Italy and in Udine as well, students usually prefer to share an apartment with other persons in order to save money. It is possible also to share a room with someone else saving extra money!

The solutions offered in Udine are:
- Renting an apartment on your own
- Sharing a flat with other students or researchers

Are apartments suitably equipped?
Apartments are usually equipped with the following items of furniture: Kitchen, Beds, Tables and chairs, Couch, Wardrobes, Bookcase, closets, etc. Please, before coming, ask the landlord about the furniture items available in the apartment or in the room (pillows, mattress, lamps, etc.) and about the bed equipment (bed linen, blanket, duvet, etc.).

How much does it cost? Example of monthly rents!
In Italy the rent is paid monthly according to the contract signed by the landlord and the tenant. In general, the cost for a room varies between €150 and € 350 per month depending on the facilities provided (washing machine, internet, telephone, etc.) and the location. Read the lease contract carefully!

What expenses are included?
Please be aware that sometimes the utilities like electricity, gas, telephone, hot water and heating are NOT included in the rent. You may also be asked to pay the municipal waste tax and building-related costs (management, upkeep, electricity, insurance, etc.). You should also ask to see the bills for the telephone and utilities (electricity, gas and water) and check that the previous tenant has paid the bills up-to-date, otherwise you could be liable for any outstanding bills! Moreover, you will also be asked to pay a deposit equal to one to three months' rent. The deposit must be returned within two months from the termination of the lease, but the landlord is allowed to keep the entire deposit or a part of it to cover any damages, redecoration costs, etc.

How to find accommodation?
You can consult ERDISU (Ente per il Diritto e le Opportunità allo Studio Universitario di Udine) website: Sportello Info Casa (available only in Italian).

In addition you can look for accommodation also through:
- La bancarella (available only in Italian)
- Città nostra (available only in Italian)
- Affitti studenti web site (available only in Italian)
- University board usually located at the General Secretariat of the University of Udine (via Mantica, 3 - 33100 Udine) offers many rental listings for students.

Another way to find suitable accommodation is by word of mouth (i.e. asking friends who already stayed in Udine or people living in the area).
Please, Remember also to ask your host organization about its accommodation service.

Are you looking for an apartment to rent?
Remember that if you rent a property through an estate agent, you must pay the agent's fee, typically around 10 per cent of a year's rent or one month's rent.

Are you a student and prefer lo live in a student residence?
If you are looking for budget accommodation (for example in a student residence) you must contact ERDiSU, the institutional body in charge of helping students find accommodation in student residences.

Useful links:
Student residences (available only in Italian);
Residenza Universitaria delle Grazie (available only in Italian).

What documents do you need in order to sign a lease contract?
In general the documents required in order to sign a lease contract are: your valid ID, the Italian tax identification number (Codice fiscale) and the deposit. Please, ask your landlord about what documents you are supposed to bring with you when signing the contract.

N.B. We inform you that, in general, research and academic institutions provide an accommodation service aiming at helping their guests to find a place to stay in Udine. Therefore we suggest you to contact your host organisation in the Province of Udine as soon as possible.
