What is there to do at weekends?
There are many opportunities to go sightseeing in interesting places in and around Trieste, in an area uniting Italy with Austria and Slovenia. There are beautiful places along the Adriatic coast, or on the Alps, Venice (2 hours by train), or Ljubljana (about 1 hour and a half by car), Zagreb (about 3 hours drive) all of which are within manageable distance from Trieste.
Do not forget to visit Aquileia, Grado, Udine, Gorizia and many other charming natural places up in the mountains in the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia.
During wintertime, for those who likes skiing, you can easily go to the mountains and spend the day there. In about 2 hours you can reach the following destinations in the region: Piancavallo, Zoncolan, Tarvisio, Sauris, etc (for further information about skiing in FVG Promotour). Furthermore you can also decide to go skiing in Austria - Passo Pramollo or even in Slovenia - Kranjska Gora .

For more information about what to do in Friuli Venezia Giulia, please visit the official website of the Regional Tourist Board

Do not forget to plan a trip in the surroundings to see the natural beauties of the Carso plateau. The Trieste plateau (Altopiano Triestino), called Kras or Carso and covering an area of about 200 km² for the Italian part has approximately 1500 caves of various size. Among the most famous are the Grotta Gigante, the largest tourist cave in the world, with a single cavity large enough to contain St Peter's Cathedral in Rome, and the Cave of Trebiciano (350 m deep) at the bottom of which flows the Timavo River. This river dives underground at Škocjan Caves in Slovenia (they are included in the UNESCO world heritage list) and flows for about 30 km before emerging at about 1 km from the sea in a series of springs near Duino, reputed by the Romans to be an entrance to Hades.
