General practitioner - For medical treatment in case of
headache, sore throat, flu, cold, allergies, etc.
You can go to the "medico di base" (general practitioner)
you have chosen when you have registered with the Italian National
Health Service or to anyone else if you hold the European
Health Insurance Card (EHIC) (for EU citizens only). The visit
will be free. Please, before starting the visit, show the doctor
your EHIC to make sure that you will not be charged any
fee.

For specialist treatment
You can go to private medical practitioners or rely on
specialist medical assistance provided by the National Health
Service. In the latter case you should first go to your general
practitioner "medico di base" who will write a prescription. You
should then take an appointment with the specialist doctor by
contacting the healthcare booking service CUP (Centro Unico
Prenotazioni). You will pay a "ticket" for the visit, i.e. a
subsidised medical fee. Remember to take the European Health
Insurance Card (EHIC) (For EU citizens only) with you. At CUP you
will be able to make an appointment for specialist treatments
provided by the ASL 1 "Triestina", "Ospedali Riuniti di Trieste"
(Maggiore and Cattinara hospitals) by IRCCS Burlo Garofolo hospital
and by approved private health organisations covered by the
national health system.

Duty doctor service - For emergency medical treatment in
the evening, on holidays and Sundays
You should call the duty doctor service (Guardia
medica) at +39 040 3991111
The service is available every night from 8 pm to 8 am (bank
holidays from 8 am to 8 pm and days before holidays from 10 am to 8
pm).
In case of emergency, one of the emergency doctors may come to your
home to treat you. Home visits are free.
118 - For emergencies
You must dial 118 to get in touch with the hospital
emergency department ("Pronto Soccorso") also in case you need an
ambulance. If you go to the casualty ward in hospital, you will be
asked about the severity of your pain or problem. Be aware that, on
the basis of your answer, you will be given a colour code (white,
yellow, green, red, depending on the seriousness of your problem).
Treatment is given on the basis of this priority and does not
follow the "first in, first out" rule. If you have a white code
(low priority), you may have to wait for some hours before you are
seen by a doctor.
Remember to always carry your health card or your EHIC
(for EU citizens only) with you and to show it to the
doctors.
