EU citizen

Are you a EU citizen resident in Italy? Your licence will be recognised.
Under directive 91/439/EEC, the driving licences issued by any EU Member State are valid on the Italian territory, provided that the licence is still valid. Hence, NO formal recognition (a sticker to be placed on the licence) is needed. Driving licences issued by other EU Member States are considered equivalent to Italian licences.
Pay attention that if your driving licence has an expiry date, you are obliged to exchange your driving licence with an Italian one. You must do it at least one month in advance of the expiry date.

What documents do you need to obtain the "Riconoscimento" (recognition) of  your driving licence?
You must bring the following documents to the Ufficio Provinciale della Motorizzazione Civile in Trieste:
- Original driving licence and a  photocopy of both its back and front;
- TT 2112 form, filled in and signed on the original;
Payment per postal paying-in slip of the administrative fee (€9 on account no. 86083623) and the revenue stamp (€14.62 on account no. 4028);
- Valid ID in original and photocopy providing details of the current residence, or self-certification of residence (self-certification form available at the Motorizzazione), or residence certificate issued within the past 6 months;
- Recognition application form (available at the Motorizzazione desk);
- Photocopy of your Italian tax identification number

Ask the Motorizzazione if you need to bring also a medical certificate with a passport-sized photo. Please note that the certificate must have been released by an authorised doctor (ask the Motorizzazione for the list of authorised doctors) within the previous six months!

Insurance in Italy is compulsory for all types of vehicles. Therefore before coming to Italy, an extension of the car insurance for Italy is needed. It must be asked at the insurance company. More information can be provided by the Authority in charge in the country of origins and by the insurance company. A 'green card' (carta verde) - temporary frontier insurance valid for 15, 30, 45, 90, 180 days - can be purchased before entering Italy. It is compulsory only for vehicles registered in other countries except for those registered in EU and EEA countries.
