Generally speaking, finding accommodation in Trieste, be it a
room or an apartment, is quite simple. In fact there are many
different options and solutions you may consider. In Italy and in
Trieste as well, students usually prefer to share an apartment with
other persons in order to save money. It is possible also to share
a room with someone else saving extra money!!!
The solutions offered in Trieste are:
- Renting an apartment on your own
- Sharing a flat with other students or researchers
Are apartments suitably equipped?
Apartments are usually equipped with the following items
of furniture: Kitchen, Beds, Tables and chairs, Couch, Wardrobes,
Bookcase, closets, etc. Please, before coming, ask the
landlord about the furniture items available in the apartment or in
the room (i.e. pillows, mattress, lamps, etc.) and about the bed
equipment (bed linen, blanket, duvet, etc.).
How much does it cost? Example of monthly rents!
In Italy the rent is paid monthly according to the
contract signed by the landlord and the tenant. In general, the
cost for a room varies between €150 and € 350 per month depending
on the facilities provided (i.e. washing machine, internet,
telephone, etc...) and the location. Read the lease
contract carefully!!!
What expenses are included?
Please be aware that sometimes the utilities like
electricity, gas, telephone, hot water and heating are NOT included
in the rent. You may also be asked to pay the municipal waste tax
and building-related costs (management, upkeep, electricity,
insurance, etc.). You should also ask to see the bills for the
telephone and utilities (electricity, gas and water) and check that
the previous tenant has paid the bills up-to-date, otherwise you
could be liable for any outstanding bills!! Moreover, you
will also be asked to pay a deposit equal to one to three months'
rent. The deposit must be returned within two months from the
termination of the lease, but the landlord is allowed to keep the
entire deposit or a part of it to cover any damages, redecoration
costs, etc.
How to find accommodation?
The best way to find suitable accommodation is by word of
mouth (i.e. asking friends who already stayed in Trieste or people
living in the area).
In addition you can look for accommodation also
through:
- Ads in Il Mercatino (Il Mercatino is a weekly magazine where
you will find plenty of advertisements for rooms or apartment to
rent. In this case a good knowledge of Italian is absolutely
necessary!)
- Affitti studenti web
site
- Bulletin boards at University or at your host
institution
Please, Remember also to ask your host organisation about its
accommodation service!!!
Are you looking for an apartment to rent?
Remember that if you rent a property through an estate
agent, you must pay the agent's fee, typically around 10 per cent
of a year's rent or one month's rent.
Are you a student and prefer lo live in a student
residence?
If you are looking for budget accommodation (i.e. in a
student residence) you must contact ERDiSU, the institutional body
in charge of helping students find accommodation e.g. in student
residences, etc. For more information about its services, please
check ERDISU website.
What documents do you need in order to sign a lease
contract?
In general the documents required in order to sign a lease
contract are: your valid ID, the Italian tax identification number
and of course the deposit. Please, ask your landlord about what
document you are supposed to bring with you when signing the
contract.
Students residential area
Trieste is considered a safe and quiet city compared to
other big Italian cities. If you would like to live close to other
students, we suggest you look for accommodation in the area between
via Fabio Severo and via Giulia (close to piazzale Europa where the
University of Trieste is based) and the San Giovanni neighbourhood
(where many faculties have their main facilities). Other popular
areas are the Miramare district, where the main international and
national research institutions are located, and the city
centre.
Other type of accommodation!
In Trieste there are several guesthouses and boarding
schools managed by religious and secular associations. Click here
to know more about them (download of the list "Catholic
and other religious residences for students").
N.B. We inform you that, in general, research and
academic institutions provide an accommodation service aiming at
helping their guests to find a place to stay in Trieste. Therefore
we suggest you to contact your host organisation in Trieste as soon
as possible.
