How can I do to apply for a visa?

The entry visa will be issued according to your purpose (study or research) and length of stay (less or more than 90 days). If you wish to know more about visas, you can consult the sections dedicated to entry and residence procedures for students and researchers. For further information, you can contact the Welcome Office staff.

What documents do I need for a permit of stay?

You should be informed that there are different types of permit of stay. It is issued in accordance with the entry visa you have applied for with the Italian Diplomatic and Consular Representative in your country of residence. If you want to have more information about the requested documents, Authorities in charge, where and how to apply for it, etc. you can visit the 'Entry and residence procedures' section for the following profiles: Non EU/EEA student and Non EU/EEA Researcher.

Do I need private health insurance?

Generally speaking, if you want to come to Italy, you must have an insurance policy, whether private or issued by a Health organisation/institution in your country of origin. If you are a EU/EEA citizen, you are covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) unless you move your permanent residency to Italy. How can I register with a General Practitioner?

To register with a General Practitioner (and/or a Paediatrician), you must first have been registered with the Italian National Health Service (SSN). Once you have registered, you will be able to choose a General Practitioner and/or a Paediatrician for your children. If you are not registered, you can nevertheless access  this service, but you will have to pay some fees. Do I need a Tax Identification Code? Where can I get it?

The Tax Identification Code (codice fiscale) is a citizen's fiscal identification and it is often required in Italy for all sorts of procedures e.g. opening a bank account, registering with the national health service, renting a flat, applying for a telephone landline, etc. It is issued immediately and is free of charge. The application must be made at local tax office of the Italian Inland Revenue Office (Agenzia delle Entrate). Where can I find information about available accommodation?

The section 'Accommodation' in Trieste or Udine provides helpful information which will help you easily find short and long term accommodation, suited to your pocket.

How can I apply for family reunion?

You can apply for family reunion only if you hold a permit of stay for subordinate work, self-employment, study, family, research or religious reasons issued for a period no shorter  than 1 year. For more information about the requested documents, the Authorities in charge, etc. you can visit the 'Family Reunion' section according to the following profiles: Non EU/EEA student or or Non EU/EEA researcher.

What about my driving licence? Is it valid also in Italy?

If you are a EU/EEA citizen or come from a Third Country, you are entitled to drive in Italy with your driving licence, unless you have transferred your residence to Italy. If you want to know more about it, you can consult the section 'Driving licence' in Trieste or Udine.

What documents do I need if I want to open a bank account in Italy?

Bank accounts can be opened in Italy by both residents and non-residents above 18 years of age. Foreigners working in Italy may open an account in order to pay in a salary and have a credit or debit card. In general terms, banks can ask for your passport or an identity card, your Tax Identification Code (Codice Fiscale), a recent utility bill (as a proof of your address) and a residence card or proof of employment in Italy (work contract or payroll).
