If you are a non EU/EEA citizen or you are not
of Swiss nationality, in order to apply for the visa (in some
cases) and the permit of stay, you have to underwrite a
private health insurance policy for the entire duration of your
stay in Italy.
Once in Italy you can register with the
SSN! Registration with the SSN is
voluntary.
Before your departure to Italy, please check if:
- your private insurance in your country is valid also in
Italy
- your National Health Insurance is valid also in Italy
Here follows more information
Do you have a private insurance in your
country?
You must know that private insurances from your country are not
accepted at the Questura, unless you have an official paper from
the Italian Embassy or Consulate from your country that certifies
the validity of your insurance. Moreover, according to the Italian
health system, an insurance must satisfy the following
requirements:
- cover expenses in case of emergency treatment and urgent
hospitalisation;
- cover the entire duration of your stay in Italy;
- provide for the policy-holder's repatriation to their country in
case of serious illness;
- be either in English or translated into Italian and authenticated
by the Italian Embassy/Consulate;
- be valid throughout the Schengen area.
N.B The policy should cover the entire period in Italy.
For further information, vist the website of Italian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ask the Italian
Diplomatic and Consular Representations in your country of
residence.
Is your home health insurance valid also in Italy?
If you are entitled to health insurance in your country of
origin and your home country has signed bilateral agreements or
conventions with Italy (such as Argentina, Australia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Brasil, Croatia, Kosovo, FYROM, Montenegro, Serbia,
Tunisia, Vojvodina, etc.) BEFORE leaving you
should get the specific form for the extension of the coverage from
your country to Italy.
Once in Italy, this paper must be submitted to ASL which will issue
a confirmation of health coverage in Italy.
If you need more information on bilateral agreements and
conventions between Italy and other countries, please visit the
following webpage of the Italian
Ministry of Labour, Health and Welfare (available only in
Italian).
Attention: if the health service from your
country does not entitle you to be covered also in Italy, ask the
Health Organisation of your home country to provide you with a
paper stating this, so that you are then entitled to register with
the Italian Health Service once you are in Italy by paying €
149,77 per calendar year.
